For more than two centuries, the men and women of the United States Coast Guard have been dedicated guardians of the nation’s waters, manning the boats, tugs, cutters, and aircrafts to protect our borders and safeguard our inland waterways for the secure shipment of more than $5.4 trillion of commerce.
On a daily basis, these heroes step up and remain Semper Paratus — always ready. Recently, we were reminded of their heroism by the crew of the USCG Cutter Munro that bravely jumped onto a drug-smuggling vessel and seized $569 million of illicit drugs. In another heroic act, Petty Officer Michael Kelly, who will be awarded the 2019 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea, magnificently rescued four fisherman who abandoned ship in a life raft during dangerous weather off the coast of Maine.
American mariners play a vital role and join the U.S. Coast Guard in protecting our 95,000 miles of coastline and inland waterways through the America’s Waterway Watch program. When an American mariner sees something, he or she will say something. Together, they constantly work to strengthen our national security.
