Rep. Oberstar (D-MN) is the former Chairman of the House Transportation Committee, and a tremendous advocate for the men and women of American maritime. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives serving his constituents in Minnesota for nearly half a century. He has been referred to as “Great Lakes shipping greatest friend and staunchest supporter” having championed policies to make waterborne commerce on the Lakes safer and more efficient.
Under his leadership, he helped ensure that the Great Lakes had available a powerful icebreaker, resulting in funding for the MACKINAW which continues to serve Great Lakes commerce, and tirelessly fought to provide funding for the Great Lakes locks to ensure cargo could efficiently, facilitating steel production and power generation throughout the Great Lakes basin. The son of an iron miner, Congressman Oberstar never forgot his blue-collar roots and always fought to protect American workers from unfair competition, serving as a staunch supporter of the Jones Act.
In his honor, his name is placed on the bow and stern of a Great Lakes freighter that continues to deliver Minnesota iron ore to steel mills throughout the Great Lakes basin.
